Work and everything else is crazy in preparation for the trip to Vegas this weekend as everything from Thursday on gets shoved into Monday-Wednesday. This is why vacations always seem like they come just in time, the act of taking vacations makes everything else busier. Still, this one is coming just in time and somehow at the wrongest time since I was just there and I'm going to end the trip being totally tense about our return flight, which should put me on the ground just in time to run to the BNW for the Improv A Go Go anniversary show.
Found time to go play softball with the BNW team last night and actually got on the field for some action, which went way better than I would have ever predicted given my completely non-athletic past. I was never one of those kids that couldn't play sports so instead pretended that I was pretending to be into sports to be ironic. No, I was the skater kid getting his skull pounded on by the guys that did play sports so my experience on the field is more than a little limited.
I managed a couple hits, caught an foul fly-ball and was part of a grand slam home run driven by Mike Fotis (which I'm sure will have a second-by-second entry in his blog, if not his dreams from now on). Our boys got to see both mom and dad not only play a sport but score at it, which might be right up there with having Pete Rose and Barry Bonds both show up to watch our final game next week as far as statistical probability goes so hopefully they enjoyed it and it was forever burned into their brains.
tonight I'm trying once again to find a way to shove what I know about improvisational tech into the brains of others that doesn't require dozens of wasted hours waiting for the right example to come up from stage in hopes that everyone catches it and learns, as that seems to be the only way of really demonstrating what I'm talking about and everything in improv is 'show don't tell' and I'll find myself using the phrases 'you'll see' way more than I would like.
this has actually been the biggest challenge over the last several years, Asaf Ronen and I even tried putting our heads together to come up with a good system of teaching it when he was here for TCIF 1 and couldn't. It's frustrating to say the least.
it's one of those things I'm actually really confident with, I know I've got skills with and I can't find a good way to teach to other people. Don't get me wrong, I like being the best at what I do (that's right, I said it...) in the booth but I really really want to share it. So we'll take another stab at doing that tonight. Hopefully everyone doesn't leave more confused then when they came in.
speaking of which, I've got work to do so I can relax and enjoy Las Vegas when we finally get there.

Teaching someone to tech? Can't be done. I still have no idea what the fuck I am doing.
Improv tech? That would be interesting!
would be. but isn't.
