Normally I have a total aversion to spending too much time talking about the weather, as it is one of the most annoying trademarks of the residents of the midwest, but that's what is on my brain these days. Not the annoying work, the waiting for the trip to Vegas, not a million other actual things in which I have an active role instead of just watching the snow melt.
Spring.
I both love and hate this time of year.
I am not a big fan of the winter and right about now every year I'm beginning to go a bit insane from being stuck indoors and having to slog, shovel and generally deal with all the crap that comes with our longest season.
So when the clocks change, the temps start to slowly rise, my driveway turns from a slippery ice trap to a slippery mud trap and the snowbanks start to turn that lovely shade of black from 5 months of cigarette butts and road snot being condensed into smaller and smaller chunks of ice - I start getting very antsy.
The little things are always what I miss the most, being able to roll the windows down in the car and relax in our screen porch in the evening (where we spent almost every night last summer and fall) - those things that have been just on the other side of the windows the whole time but totally off limits thanks to the cold. Those are the things I look forward to.
I have been plenty of places where they don't have real "seasons" (as well as places in California where they can make it from swimming in the ocean to snowboarding in the mountains in an hour and appreciate neither) and I'm convinced it's our bleak, grey winters that make me appreciate spring and the short warm months afterward.
I know. I get it. I fully appreciate springtime. I will appreciate it even more from my chair on the back deck with the grill going, music playing out the open windows and the kids running around outside.
Now can we just HAVE it??
